YACHTSTOCK HISTORY – HOW SOME SLAVES TO ROCK AND ROLL STARTED SERVING THEIR COMMUNITY
In 1996 a small group of musicians in Delaware County decided to put together an outdoor jam session at the West End boat Club on the scenic Delaware River in Essington, PA. Each year the event grew as more singers and musicians got involved. Everyone donated their time, expertise and talents to what became an annual music festival.
In 1999, Yachtstock participants decided to raise money for a local family whose child was battling cancer and struggling with medical bills. Fundraising became a focal point of the event. Over the years the Yachtstock RiverJam, and more recently, Yachtstock Rocktoberfest, and other fundraising activities have raised tens of thousands of dollars for families of local children with chronic health conditions as well as other worthy charities such as Shriners Childrens Hospital – Philadelphia Unit, and the American Cancer Society Children’s Fund.
In 2008-2009 the Yachtstock team applied for and received a 501(c)3, non-profit status, became incorporated and put together a board of directors. The board and all participants are volunteers. In addition to the love of music and community, helping these families at such a difficult time and seeing the smiles on the kid’s faces make all the hard work worthwhile.
